How we do it - Part # 4 - Painting with Robbie...

Robbie uses masking tape, brushes and acrylic gouache to bring the EL DIABLO resin toys to life. He came up with the idea to mask off the eyes before I primed the DIABLO's all black to take advantage of the solid white resin it was cast in underneath. Another case of if it's already there why not use it to our advantage. He also uses the same paints he works with on all of his paintings to paint on the actual toys - how cool is that! Jared Deal does it the same way with all the painted Vladimir toys we make. Artist's truly doing their thing with their toys...can't beat that. Next up - packaging!!!

How we do it - Part # 3 - Priming...

Since I sand the Resin castings even more after they're pulled from the mold the surface can get a little slick so I use a spray can primer to give the surface some grip for paint apps. Since black is a major part of the EL DIABLO color scheme on the fully painted pieces why not use it? Coverage is done bit by bit with some drying time between each round of applications to avoid any over spray and bumpy drips.

I finally found a good use for my balcony too...Painting with Robbie is next...

How we do it part # 2 - mold, cast and tool...

Once the wax sculpt of EL DIABLO is approved by Robbie Busch - I make silicone molds and pour a few resin castings and tool them up. A bit of wet and dry sanding is needed and a little Dremmel rotary tool work to grind off the extra resin on the feet pour spouts to give the casting that nice finished look. Once I get them all cleaned up Robbie comes over and gives them the once over and collect them. I have one more stage to show before wave one is handed off to Robby for paintmastering!
I'm glad Robbie came over and took all these pictures so we could eventually chronicle how these projects come to fruition. Maybe next time I'll take more pictures on a future project to show the process in much more detail. Paint prep next, then paint...

How we do it - Part # 1, sculpting the toy prototype...

Welcome to part one of how we do it here at Argonaut Resins - I'm going to post some behind the scenes images and talk about how I produce designer resin toys. Jared Deal, Robbie Busch and myself have been getting a lot of questions on how all of this is done so I thought I'd shed a little light on how we make it happen. I've already said the why in my interview (http://toysrevil.blogspot.com/2008/12/2008-wrap-up-with-tre-end-argonaut.html) with Andy Heng over at the infamous and uber popular blog ToysRevil and teased you with some in progress shots over at another heavyweight blogsite - Toycyte (Robbie's ineterview with big dog Jeremy Brautman - http://www.toycyte.com/ring-in-the-new-year-with-robbie-buschs-el-diablo).

First up is the work in progress (WIP) shots of the EL DIABLO designer toy from wires to finished sculpt. I used aluminum wires, foil, plumbers putty and Super Sculpey. The foil filler is to keep from wasting all my clay on a big figure and keep the overall weight down on the prototype. The plumbers putty is for strength since the feet and ankles will have the most stress as I build the figure up and handle the piece. I use a hard/brittle toy wax called Azbro for the overall finish - it polishes great and holds optimal detail. Questions??? Email me.

Keep an eye on the blog for more pictures of behind the scenes. Part # 2 real soon!
